A recurring report needs a definition owner, business question, population, period, calculation, exclusions, source systems, refresh time, and known limitations. A familiar column name is not a definition.
Define the support lane
An offshore reporting specialist can reconcile inputs, run approved calculations, and flag breaks. They should not silently reinterpret a metric or present an estimate as an approved result.
Separate facts from decisions
Compare the current definition with the prior report, dashboard configuration, and owner record. When they conflict, preserve both interpretations and stop the affected output at the agreed control point.
Prepare the handoff
Ask the owner a bounded question showing the consequence of each interpretation. Document the decision, effective period, need for restatement, and treatment of historical comparisons.
Verify the system state
Before distribution, verify period labels, totals, filters, refresh status, exclusions, and approval evidence. Keep a change note visible to readers when definitions materially shift.
Review the evidence
A definition-owner check prevents polished reports from institutionalizing ambiguity. Preparation can be delegated; interpretation and business use remain accountable decisions.
